Fidget Toys update for Parents and Carers

Back to News and Events

At New Oscott, we are always looking for ways to support children in feeling happy, calm, and ready to learn.

Research shows that sensory resources, sometimes called fidget tools, can help some children improve their focus, attention, and self-regulation during lessons. For some pupils, these small sensory items can make it easier to concentrate and engage with learning activities.

It is important, however, that children are shown how to use these tools properly. Without guidance, fidget items can sometimes become a distraction rather than a support, and children may begin to use them simply as toys. When used correctly, they should help children focus on learning, not take attention away from it. For this reason, sensory fidget tools will only be provided where there is an identified need as part of a child’s individual learning plan. Any resources will be carefully chosen and issued by school staff. The items provided will be quiet, sensory-based, and suitable for classroom use.

We kindly ask that fidget toys or sensory items are not brought into school from home. Personal items can easily become distracting, get misplaced, or may not be appropriate for the classroom environment. By providing resources through school, we can ensure they are used consistently, fairly, and in the best way to support all children’s learning.

Thank you for supporting making our learning environments to be the best they can be for all children.
